Sutro Project / Caselli Mansion

Built in 1892 by an eccentric policeman on 17 acres, the Caselli mansion has been an apartment building for most its otherwise majestic history.



Victorian mansions were predominantly built on Nob Hill, rather than the boonies of Eureka Valley (now the Castro). Because of its remote location (and the Golden Fire Hydrant) the building survived the fire of 1906 and outlived most of its architectural contemporaries.



The smaller but well preserved Haas-Lilienthal House is of similar vintage and hosts indoor tours.
