Consistently ranked the number one public university in the country, Cal may be best known for it's historical role in the free-speech and antiwar movements both spearheading and defining the 1960s.
While the city of Berkeley vibes resistance in many ways (lots of panhandlers, People's Park, etc), most Cal students live more like mainstream over-achieving college students: working hard, playing hard, sleeping little - and getting their bear on when the cardinal are in town :)
The campus is large, makes for a great walk, and adjoins with the Telegraph city center.
